What college major/minor would you take for investment banking and what do you do once you graduate college?

Major in Economics, minor in either Banking, Finance or Corporate Investment.

Economics, because it will definitely provide you with an extensive and intensive appreciation of the business environment, domestically and globally. Amongst such subjects are: WTO, IMF-WB, GNP, GDP, international trade/relations, International Reserves, Central Banking, Reserve Requirement, arbitrage/hedging, micro/macro economics, systems dynamics in global funds, economic union vis-a-vis political union, monetary policy vs fiscal policy, inflation & interest rates, and countless other subjects that will make you have a better grasp of investment banking in a local and international scale.

The minor will provide you with the additional details while an MBA or MS/MA Economics will further hone your knowledge and skills thru actual cases and readings in business and economics.

After college, you could probably start off with a government institution (Federal Reserve) that has to do with monetary and fiscal policies or a privately-owned corporation active in banking, financing and investments.

Finance would be a good choice. A degree in accounting would also be helpful, but not necessary. An MBA would be a definite plus, but some companies pay for those once you are employed with them and have some experience. There are several areas where you could work. Stock brokerage companies, Banks, Mortgage companies, Real Estate companies are some areas where you might find work. You may also find Attorney's or CPS's who work with companies who want to go public might want to use your expertise. Of course, there are Investment Banking firms.

Finance, and/or accounting. A good foundation in financial accounting is essential to understanding what goes into the numbers on the financial statements. A minor in economics wouldnt hurt.

A degree in nearly any quantitative discipline is good. That would include finance, math, accounting, etc.

MUCH more important than your degree is where you got it and your record while in school. Top-drawer I-banks only interview at the top 20 or so schools in the country and then they only interview those students graduating *** laude.

Most major I-banks will hire superior graduates but you eventually need an MBA from a top 7-8 graduate business school.
