Does a career in investment banking pay off in the end? |
I was considering a career path in this area. What do you think? what can you tell me about it? If you are willing to work 20 hour work days, and kiss someone's *** then investment banking is a good career for you. Not very many people make it to the coveted position of managing director, and if you don't life is going to suck. I recommend doing the 2-3 year analyst stint, then go to business school and maybe work as an associate for another few years. You should acquire quite a bit of money during this time because you wont have any time to spend your large paychecks. Make the transition from investment banking to an area where you can enjoy your life and not work 100 hours per week. If you work your butt off, it pays off monetarily. I think after 5 years, the average investment banker is making about 300k a year. After 10 years, the average is about a million a year. That being said, it's a lot of work....You probably average at least 70 hours a week...If not more. Sure it can be great money, but investment banking is a lot like getting a job in Philosophy. There is money in it as long as you have the right one! |
