Why do investment bankers usually get pirated in Corporate Finance positions of conglomerates?

Does that mean that it would be prudent for me to just go straight to corporate finance in a conglomerate rather than use investment banking as a stepping stone?

If you are already starting with a high base in the Cor Fin job, then there is no need to go to an I-Bank. Cor Fin is more holistic than an I-Bank position because you are actually accountable for all the strategic decisions you make.

CorpFin positions are attractive to Ibankers because, after they've made huge money for enough years with essentially no time for life, they hit that point of realization that says eventually I want kids, I want to see them grow up, etc.

I-bankers also have the background that allows them to capture higher compensation packages versus that linear route you're considering.

If you want the extra million in net worth ten years from now, go the I-bank route for a half dozen years first.
