An investment bank helps a company raise capital (maybe for an initial public offering or for expanding a business line) by arrainging the sale of securities (stocks, bonds, preferred, convertables) of that company to other institutions which sell them to the "public".

In most basic terms, a security is an investment instrument that represents either partial ownership in a company (stock) or represents a debt owed to the investor by the company (bond) or a combination of the two.

A brokerage firm sells securities to the public and allows for investors to open accounts to trade securities.

Many firms (Merrill, Morgan Stanley, etc) are involved in both areas.

No clue on Canadian investment banks, but try the website of the Toronto Stock Exchange (www.tsx.com); they have a list of participating organizations.
