What is an investment bank as opposed to just a "bank"?

It's a bank that participates in underwriting -- that is, it provides services to companies in issuing new securities, acts as an agent for corporations, provides merger & acquisitions support, etc.

An investment bank helps to raise capital for corporations that want to "go public" by selling their stock for them. The company gets proceeds from the underwriting and the investment bank keeps some as a fee. An example would be Goldman Sachs or Lehman Brothers. A standard bank is what is down the street on the corner and provides checking accounts, CDs (poor investment, by the way), etc. Examples would be Wachovia, Wells Fargo, Bank of America.
