Which is the best bank in Europe - by category personal banking, investment banking, retail banking etc?

Personal banking (I assume you meant Private Banking), try the big guys -- UBS, Credit Suisse

Investment banking -- depending on what you want to do (M&A advisory, origination, etc.), Goldman, JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Barcap, Lehman, etc.

Retail banking -- this refers to mass market banking, then the top 3-5 banks for each European country are the best ones (e.g. Santander, BBVA in Spain, ABN Amro, Rabo, Fortis in Netherlands, BNP, SocGen in France, etc.). There isn't one that dominates European retail banking landscape.

Any bank in Monaco is your best bet. Most European banks are becoming very Americanized, if you know what I mean, including Swiss banks.
