What is the difference between working for US investment bank and a European investment bank?

ie, what is the difference between the culutre at UBS and the culture at Lehman Bros?

Many would say working hours are longer at US banks, and the money is better - but is this really true?

I am asking from the point of view of technal staff within the bank, eg traders etc.

I don't know about the money aspect - but in general working culture in Europe is different from US for most employers (not just investment banks). That is at least in part due to the fact that some European governments have written laws mandating limits on work weeks. For example, in France I believe the work week is limited to 35 hours. In the US on the other hand 40 is considered minimum for full-time by many, and it is common in many companies for people to work 50 or more.

From personal experience, I believe Americans attach greater importance to working long hours than do Europeans - but this is a very general statement and certainly there are plenty of exceptions on both sides of the Atlantic.

Many US companies have a corporate culture that expects more than 40 hours / week - though it's never officially written into their policies.
