What is an investment bank?

and how is that different from retail banks? a detailed explanation with differences would be quite helpful...

The classic example of an investment bank in the US is Goldman Sachs. Investment banks carry out a few key activities:

Mergers and Acquisition: providing expertise and consulting for either buying or selling companies as they seek to merge or acquire other companies.

Corporate Finance: helping companies prepare and sell securities (stock or debt), either in the public markets or in 'private placements'.

Investment Research: stock analysis, etc.

Sometimes these companies also have money management arms and brokerage operations as well.

An investment bank is meant for assisting public and private corporations and help them to raise their funds in the Capital Markets. They provide strategic advisory services regarding mergers, acquisitions and other kinds of financial transactions. The difference between the investment banks and the commercial ones is that the last ones are meant for making commercial and retail loans and directly taking deposits.
