Student Stock Portfolio?

I am a college student and I am taking an Investments course. As part of the class we have to buy 100 shares of stock in 10 different companies with a stock stimulation site, www.stocktrak.com. I do not know where to start...I have chosen two so far..

Consider a few big American companies ( for safety) that do a large percentage of their business overseas ( for growth)..
Try UTX...MCD..IBM..GE..DE
Another angle is agricultural companies ( same size world, bigger population)..AG..TRA..POT..MON and DE ( again)

start by playing it safe and buying stocks that pobably wont go down any farther. maybe watch CNBC or read financial articles

look at commodities too
