My website has 1 million impressions and 200,000 visitors a month - how do I make money from it?

I've been running a very niche website for medical travel for 8 years. Its receives 1 million impressions per month and around 200 thousand visitors per month. I've tried all sorts of advertising models but they haven't worked very well. It is an international website, with around 50% from the US, 35% from Europe and 15% from the rest of the world - its only available in English at the moment. The website is number 1 for several niche search words on Google and Yahoo and usually on the first page for related key words. The problem is I think, is that it is a niche market - medical companies don't want to advertise because its travel related, travel companies don't want to advertise because its medical related. I've thought about turning ti into a charity - so far its all been my own personal investment - because there are patient education grants available - but I would still want to recoup the investment I have made. Any ideas would be very much appreciateed. Cheers.

1. I do have google adsense on there but the income is minimal unfortunately.

2. How did I generate so much traffic? In 1999 there wasn't any websites that had the information I needed. So I set up the website and invited organisations, patients, medical staff to provide me with the information. They in turn linked to me - most of them are national charities and medical organisations. So I had lots of quality links in. And it just snowballed from there. It's also appeared in quality newspapers such as the Times. I haven't paid for advertising, nor do I link to unrelated websites. I guess the Google rank is so high because the website has been online since 2000. Cheers.

what about advertising, say, Calling Cards? maybe?

People going to your site might be interested in calling cards? (its related to travel)

And what about travel insurance?

Offering people, like google, to put their adds on it. That's how most free sites make money.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO GENERATE SO MUCH TRAFFIC AND HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO GET THAT MUCH TRAFFIC?

Wow.. no one wants to advertise on it because its not percieved to be related to their field...just goes to show you the stupidity of people.

First, based on your information you need to get it into other langs. It's not difficiult or that expensive.

Second. Gather your same information except make sure they are unique visitors. That isn't hard either.

Finally. Maybe its time to move your site to a subscription based service. Forget advertising. Nobody cares about it and what I'm suggesting can be done in conjunction with it anyway.

Set up a pay schedule that rewards you for this information. You can have some of your information/pages still free... but have premium content for your subscribers.

Let's say you charge 19.95 USD a year and only 10% of all your visitors sign up.. that's 399,999 USD per year to you. You can make the adjustments to what I'm suggesting.

Adding this feature to a website is VERY easy.
