What business career should I go into with a bachelors in finance?

I hold a Bachelors Degree in Finance, but even though I have not been able to find any position with advancement potential and have so far only been working low income jobs. I completed my education rather late and am now already way into my 30's and feel that I am running out of time (may even already be) to get a career going. Does anybody have any ideas what sectors I should be looking into with huge advancement potential?

I have been very interested in investment companies, but have never been able to obtain employment at any of these institutions.

Finance is great in investment banking (really you are then in sales and business ops) ... Most power players are highly dynamic, or some have earned their CPA and/or JD and kissed up to someone like that, and are riding their coattails.

You can also get into sales, or any other business segment. Finance is really a money based business degree, and all companies run on those principles...

It's hard to advise you if I don't know your personality, to help you decide what you want to do.

As far as your age? I have a neighbor who got her JD in her 40s and she's now a judge. She bought land in the Carribean, and is building her dream home and poised to retire in 3 years.

Go for it. Don't apologize, but network into the companies you want to work for. Investment companies tend to be very "Good ol' boy" club, so you will have to try and find out who is in there and/or who knows someone in there, and persist until you get in....Get creative and try some things, like: Read articles about their firm, write letters/emails to management that reflect your thoughts or at least express interest...Call and identify some people within the company you can network with/ask for their help and guidance...Take any stupid job in the company and try to siddle into the role you want (a la "Secret of My Success")...

It seems like you already realize you are not the typical candidate, so you must realize that you are not going to get in the front door in a typical way. That's my thought process, anyway.

By the way, if you need some inspiration, look at this kid - absolutely amazing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooQKUYQ_WgQ
