Unclaimed assets company contacted me, wants 35% of assets.?

I got divorced 11 years ago, and started a couple of investments. I got mixed up and forgot about one - in order to claim it I have to pay this company 35% of the 23K that I invested. I do not know where I invested, they probably changed their name and I moved three times. Please advise how I can claim without such a high %age.

Check the website of the state government where you lived and where you invested. Most have databases that you can search online. All allow you to claim the money directly (once you know the correct state) for free. You only have to pay a % if you decide to have the company file the claim for you.

I thank you all for your sensible answers, they were all good. I know I must have been in NJ when I invested, but I cannot find it on the NJ databases. If all else fails I will HAVE to go through the company who informed me, the one that wants 35% of the 23K. I cannot see another way out. Report It

Don't pay 35%! Go to your state's unclaimed property division. If you lived in other states, try them as well. It's free to search and claim your property.
If you have any property to claim, it will show by your name.
It may take several weeks for processing.

Only if you are foolish enough to go through THEM will you have to pay. Check your financial records for such, your tax records will have to show some of that as well, The I.R.S. may be able to help you there if you don't have the records. Do you recall what investment agency you worked-through? let THEM try helping you as well.

The State you live in will provide to you, free of charge ususally, a list of unclaimed property. Give them your name and any alias names. Then, you can claim it yourself.
