I want t go to school for investment management..what excatly am i getting myself into? |
and im also very very interested in becoming a stock broker will this help me to become a stock broker? and what kind of carrer could i get into with a degree in this field? As a Financial Professional for the last 21 years (I sold my business 2 years ago to trade futures for a living), I can tell you alot about the profession of being a stock broker. I started with the largest brokerage firm in the world. Although you don't need a degree, you do need the ability to pass some very difficult exams and more importantly, you need the ability to sell people on yourself and your strategies for investing. Usually the firm you work for will teach you how to do that. Getting hired can be a bit problematic. They are looking for someone with an outgoing personality and a great work ethic. When I started out over 20 years ago, I cold called over 100 people a day hoping for 10% of them to say yes to what I was offering. Then after working on following up weekly on those who showed an interest, I hoped to convert 1% of those to clients over time. This process can be expediated if you have had a position where you already had people who trust you or if you have family conections. I don't know if things have changed much in the intervening years since I got my training but suffiace to say it is important to go into this business knowing how hard it is to break in. Aside for that, the good news is that if you are good, you can make a lot of money. The top brokers in my office made anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000. In larger offices, that number goes up significantly. One final note, in 2003 I gave 46 investment seminars. These seminars were very good at getting new clients. I hope that this information helps you to make a good decision. Good Luck and God Bless! You are getting into a field that will consist of many college graduates trying to become brokers because they like Boiler Room movie and they can't get jobs with their History/Psychology/Marketing/English/PE/... degree. Stock brokers are car salesmen with degrees. Sure you might make it but it will be a tough road ahead unless you are extraordinary. You dont need a degree to be a stockbroker. Being a broker and an investment manager are two different things. Being a broker is abour sales. Its like being a real estate agent or insurance sales person. Get hired and then get certified. Being an investment manager is more analytical. For that you need a degree in finance and accounting. An MBA would be a good thing too. Some studies show managers with an MBA have better performance. some tough courses. |
