Can I roll my TSP into Real Estate?

I plan on building a house, can I use my TSP as an investment into real estate?

I recommend that you talk to an attorney who specializes in real estate law about that.

There may be reasons why it would not be in your best interest to do that.

I don't know the parameters for a TSP, as in, does it work just like a 401k that, once you leave your employer you have to roll it over to an account NOT managed by your employer. If it's just like that then here's some knowledge and some resources too.

I have money in a self-directed roth ira which allows me to make real estate investments with that money. If your TSP can rollover into a SD IRA, then yes.

If it's retirement money, you cannot build a house to live in for yourself from the IRA funds. Strictly for investment, yes.

There's a lot to learn here, that's why I've suggested a way to do it and kept my answer brief.

Best wishes,
Angie

I don't think you can roll your TSP into investment real estate, but you can definitely borrow up to a certain amount for those kinds of things. The interest rate is usually good as you are paying yourself back, not the bank.

Yes you can. You wont be able to get all of it but you can access a loan. Normally you wont be able to access loans to the tune of 300,000 however what you can do is find some good real estate such as distressed homes and foreclosed properties. To build on your own land might be tricky. But lets say you but a foreclosed property with a small loan from the TSP, then you use your equity in that home to build the property on your own land. This is a great way to allow the property to be free from encumbrances and start out with some steady cash flow in your pocket. I got a step by step guide for this process here: http://bestbuyrealestate.info/2007/11/15...
