What is the best 401k plan for a long term investment (30-40 years)? |
What is the best 401k plan for a long term investment (30-40 years)? OPM is right. Don't confuse the type of account (401k in this case) with choosing an investment mix. I help businesses design and implement retirement plans and as OPM said, you are limited by the plan your employer chooses. That doesn't mean you should put your money elsewhere, especially if your employer provides any kind of match. Unless you are the employer and are choosing plans, you don't have much in terms of a choice. Your employer chooses your options for you and you pick from those. It then depends upon the options they give you. For example, even though most people would say "stocks" the equity options at my prior employer were so poor that you would have lost money consistantly by that choice. It really depends upon what your employer is providing. |
