Is there a long term investment plan that I can buy and sell stocks through?

Is there some kind of tax-exempt retirement thing where I can buy and sell securities through with complete control? If there is one, what kind of penalty is assesed for cashing it in early?

They are called IRA accounts. You can invest up to $4000 a year if your income is under a certain amount. It varies depending on whether you are married or not. Don't ask me why that should be. Is is called an IRA--Individual Retirement Account. There are two types. Roth IRA and traditional IRA. My favorite is Roth IRA because all money earned by that account is tax free. Over 20 to 40 years. That can be a lot of money. Every on line broker I know of offers them. You can start one by April 15, and deposit money that counts toward your 2006 contribution. Get with it.

A 401K is an employer sponsered plan. They do not allow buying and selling stocks. They normally have mutual funds you can invest in. Report It

With a traditional or Roth IRA, you can easily do this. The account will be just like a regular brokerage account in which you can trade stocks through but will have the tax-advantaged features of an IRA.

IRAs do have a penalty for cashing out early, with exceptions to pay off student loans and to buy a first house.
