Held to maturity securities, trading securities and available for sale securities are categories of investments.... collateralized mortagae obligations are bundles of mortgages wrapped up and sold. these are investments. the reason for this credit crunch actually. investment salespeople wrapped these into single investments and found a loop hole to put sub-prime mortgages in. here's the rub...only 80% of the mortgages within these cmo's have to be AAA for the whole thing to be rated AAA. so 20% were able to be sub-prime mortgages within a cmo and still be able to be rated AAA. they were sold to everyone without them knowing. |
