Whats a good book to get to learn about stocks for a beginning investor?

i know a little bit, but id like to get a good understanding before i invest

"You have more than you know" by the Motley Fool is what I recommend to friends.

It is a great starting point for any beginning investor, and also covers a bit on personal finance.

I'd also recommend The Wealthy Barber.

The book called "Learning about the stock market through trial and error", by Leo Lion.

As an investor and trader for over twenty years, I've seen just about all I need to see.

I've had spectacular gains, and severe losses, while trying to average out and buy quality stocks when they offer great opportunity.

There is no book that can teach you all you need to know that I know of.

Any discount broker can provide you information about the mechanics of investing for the long term.

There are basics you should know...like investing through a plan, one usually offered by employers like a 401K, which you should max out to it's fullest...many give you incentives like matching some of your investment.

After that, you need to know about good quality companies that pay dividends...buying their stocks when they seem cheap enough.

Beware quick rich schemes like trading stock options, because many stocks require a long period of time to appreciate, and thinking they will make dramatic moves in a short period of time by buying their puts and calls...usually results in losing small amounts of money when the options expire worthless.

You need to begin by charting some well known name brand stocks, and buying into them in small increments.

For the short term, stay away from big banks, airlines, real estate and automobile makers...because with a recession, these companies are in some trouble.

Good luck.

try this website. It can teach you a lot about investing in the stock market.
