How and where can a small investor invest in precious and semiprecious metals?

I've found Evergreen's Precious Metals Fund to be the one I use the most. Franklin's Gold & Precious Metals Fund is good, too, but the Evergreen one was better numbers.

A better question is why in the hell you'd want to put your money into precious metals right now. I guess a nearly year-long run-up and prices at 25-year highs seems like buying signals to you.

Hint: Try buying quality investments when they are "on sale". Not when the herd is moving towards them and pushing the prices beyond reasonable levels.

Consider ETFs that are exposed to it or mining companies.

I would use the gold/silver ETF's, ticker symbols gld and slv, respectively. They mimic the price of gold and silver you see quoted on cnbc. Here is info from iShares, the company who runs the ETF.
