If I am a young investor hoping to save $ for college and beyond, what is the best type of investment for me? Clark Howard (who has a daily radio show about how to save money and spend less) would say to get Student Loans because the money you save now and invest elsewhere will benefit you more long-term than if you spend it all on the cost of College. A Roth IRA is the absolute best idea. Please check it out-you can get one through any major bank. I suggest MFS. It depends on how much you have to start. If it is 1000 or less you should consider a CD for now until you have saved more. when you have more then go to your local bank's financial advisor. They will help you with what options are available and how best to save for college. They are free and an excellent resource. I would suggest a smaller local bank because their advisors usually provide better service to small investors. The general rule is do not do anything risky with short term money. Saving for college sounds short term, so I think you should be conservative, and save in a money market fund or a certificate of deposit. You will not get huge returns, but your education money will be safe. http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/... |
