As a young student investor first investing, what are some good very small (below $1000) investments?

I understand that T-Bills are great to buy, though possibly not in this economy. What are some great small time investments to do with less than $1000, possibly just $200 or so? I know that is a very small start, but I was wanting to start investing at a small slow rate.

Being you don't have money to loose put it in a regular savings or CD. Some banks, mine does, will if you ask still do a CD for $500.00 most having a minimum of $1,000.00

Are you saving this money for a short amout of time - then you want realatively safe invesments. Check out the CD rates at the local banks, but they may have a $1,000 minimum.

If you're saving long-term, then historically speaking, getting the money into a mutual fund (a market index fund, such as the S&P 500) is the way to go. If you're investing for the long-term, then you don't pay attention to all of the market fluctuations on a week to week or quarter to quarter basis.

I'd buy a couple of books, subscribe a magazine or sign up for a course about investing.

The other question I'd try to figure out is if I am an investor or just a saver, and what's my tolerance to risk.

I started with only $300 and it is enough to invest in stocks with. You need to invest in good stocks and with a little homework they arent too hard to find. If you start with say $500 for example, and your stock goes up 10% you just made $50 which isnt much but over time that money builds and 10% becomes a lot.
