Do you call investor relations offices? If so, what do you ask them?

Yes I do.

I have asked them questions about their financial statements (for example if it is unclear what is in a line marketed "other" but there seems to be a significant changed there).

I've asked them about market position and details about new products and the competitive environment of that product.

They will not and can not answer ALL questions but if you have any questions about a company's filings or press releases they are a good place to start your investigation.
