How does an investor who is long protect himself from having his shares borrowed?

Some investors sell short. Some investors sell naked shorts. Is there a way for companies to protect themselves from naked shorts?

Naked Shorts are Real and not a Myth. Check out http://buyins.net/

The SEC is not holding Brokers responsible for failure to deliver the equities that are being shorted. There are a number of penny stocks being shorted beyond the # of outstanding shares. This is a real problem for investors in the Penny Stock arena.
There is a CEO of the company CSHD who has Congressional Commitees researching the problem of Naked Shorts and how they affect shareholders.

The way to protect yourself against having your shares borrowed is to take delivery of them. Then you have them. But there is very little if any risk to you if your shares are borrowed.

not possible. You don't have to worry because your broker will hold the short responsible. You wont even know they are borrowed.

the term 'borrowed' is only a technical term... if u r a investor who is long then u dont hav to worry abt ur stock... it is resp. of the short to cover it at the end of the day....

oppurtunities exist in the market because of longs and shorts... so why would company want to interfere with the market... they hav no biz to do that...

"Naked shorts" are a myth created by inept CEO's to blame their stocks poor perfomance on. OSTK is a prime example. Trust me, the more a company complains about shorts driving down their price, the more likely it is that anybody who is short is right.
As far as preventing your stock from being borrowed, if you signed a margin agreement when you opened your account, you're out of luck. If you didn't, keep your shares in Type 1 and those particular ones can't be loaned out. It is extremely unlikely that you are goning to affect availability of stock by doing this, but if it makes you feel better....
