What exactly is an underwritten investor?

Like if someone say's they are an underwritten investor in a company.

It means that they have a company's financial backing to a specified investment program. Someone has crunched the numbers and set a target and evaluated the investment program that this person is now charged with carrying out.

In ancient Rome, it would be saying he was a client of a Patron who told the client what he wanted done with his (the Patron's) money that the client is investing. So, the practice goes way back.
