There are a lot of idiotic responses so far... Basically you can either invest in real estate (or land) and play landlord, or invest in paper assets... In paper assets, there is a bewildering array of possibilities - stocks, bonds, CDs, annuities, mutual funds, ETFs, futures, options... Then of course each is subdivided - bonds for example can be government, municipal, or corporate, and THEN divided even further by quality.

I would strongly recommend buying a few books on learning about paper assets, AND see a financial advisor. You are not gonna get the quality info you need for 50K on a free message board.

Explore annuities. There are several different kinds. They are safe, they are high-interest and one day they will pay you back handsomely.

best way is to look at moneysupermarket.com, and see what sort of interest rates there are out there.

Long term might not be the best bet at the moment if you chose a fixed interest rate as it looks like they might go up again in the near future.

Might be a good idea to split the money into several lumps 5 x 拢10000 for instance.

1st 拢3000 every year must go into an ISA though to make best use of the tax free status
