When you buy stocks at market value how long can you hold them?

For instance I bought 10 shares of AT&T at market value. I want hold them for 5 years or more, as a long term investment can I do that?

Thank you guys you have been very helpful...

You can hold them for 5 seconds, 5 days, 5 years or 5 decades.

You can hold on to them from now until AT&T goes out of business (decades from now)

You can hold them the remainder of your life and even will them to your kids. You can sell them immoderately or in the case of a short sale, you can sell them before you buy them. Totally up to you.

yes you can hold your shares as long as you want

Indefinitely. At death they would only be deemed disposed of. It would be up to the estate to decide if they want to sell them. If you wanted to keep them past death, set up a trust to hold them on someone's behalf or transfer ownership prior to death. (that is a taxable event however)
