For those of you who manage your own stocks, how many different ones do you own ?

(individual stocks...not mutual funds)

12 stocks.

I also try to keep a mixture of resource, energy and industrials.

20

I like to keep them between 5-10. That's a manageble number and when the indicators or fundamentals change, I'll try to move another one in and sell the bad one.
///

ten to twelve

Between1-4

approximately 120...to name a few: aapl, aai, sbux,hans,tie,hog,
gs, ua, bsm, nvtl, swir, topt, bry, jci, xom, vlo, fto, dell, ge, intc, amd, unp....

even analysts have a difficult time covering more than 20 names. covering too many names risks that you might fall behind on one particular security, but then again, individual investors don't have to go through the trouble of writing analyst reports :)

I like to keep the number Small, between 3 and 5, that way if one of my stocks increases a lot my total portfolio also increases a lot.
More stocks usually means less fluctuation in portfolio value and less chance of huge gains. Of course, also less chance of huge losses.
Anyway, for a small part of my capital, I am prepared to take on some risk with the opportunity for making much larger gains.
One strategy I particularly like is the stocksmonthly system.
