Job with a startup, how much equity?

I'm thinking of taking a job with a web startup company.
It is currently in the developmental stage and is not yet funded.
I would be responsible for managing the development of the site, as well as [continued development and] running the site once it's built.
Until we get funding I would be working at a severely discounted rate.

How much equity is fair for me to ask for?

Sorry, I should have been more clear.
My question is what % equity is it fair to ask for.

thanks.

It sounds like you'd basically be the CIO of the company. If it was me, I'd ask to review the business plan and ask for something that sounds monetarily reasonable based on the plan. Equity might mean you could get a lump sum with a quick sale or it could mean that you start getting small dividend checks if the primary owner wants to hang onto it (and plans to pay a dividend to themself).

edit: The percentage should change according to the business plan. 10% might not be reasonable if they don't plan on netting very much and holding it closely for 10+ years, but 10% might be too much if they plan on flipping it within 3 years for $20000000. If it's well written and researched, you should also gain other valuable insights by reading their plan.
