Can you set up a self managed superannuation fund and buy a property that you can rent yourself??

I don't see why not. Buying a property with super funds is legal and renting your own property is also legal. Must be ok but check with an expert.

It sounds like you don't already have a self-managed fund (SMSF), and you really need to take some advice (from a financial planner) on how to set one up and understand the prudential requirements in terms of your investment profile. Investments that are not at arms-length and on commercial terms are likely to be viewed unfavourably by the ATO. You also have the issue of getting sufficient funds into the SMSF to make the necessary purchase, and in Australia, opportunites for significant transfers are now limited. If you have to borrow the money, then the process becomes a good deal more complex. Get some professional advice.
