Is North Carolina a tax lien state?

I've heard yes and I've heard no. Does anyone know for sure? I know that NC has tax deed sales, possibly with redemption periods. In that case you would be paid interest on your investment just like a tax lien, but you would have to put up a lot more money up front. I want to know if I can buy a true tax lien, for just the amount of taxes owed, plus admin. fees and such. Thanks for your help.

Call tax collector down at your city/town hall. I bought in Alabama, every year they would have a tax auction, starting bid was taxes owed, they would give you a list. You could not get an actual deed until 3 yrs, then you could get a Sheriff's Deed, the prior owners could redeem during that period, but I think it was 10% interest, which is pretty good. It was fun. Properties were bought for pennies on the dollar, from my experience it was vacant land that you had the most chance of actually owning after the three years, for example there was a subdivision project that ran out of money to be built and a bunch of lots went to tax sales. You don't get a nice house/building at a tax sale for pennies of what is worth, I am sure it has happened but it is probably as rare as a Unicorn, for one thing any mortgage company on the title would pay the taxes and foreclose.
