When do you know that you should go from Ebay to your own site?

I sell on Ebay and I have been doing it for a several months now. Things are going good. I intend to open my own
e-commerce website, I am just wondering when I should do it. I am not sure if I should do it until I start to turn a significant profit from my current platform (ebay) or if I should move forward with it regardless of what's going on with my ebay store. The ecommerce investment will be much greater (3-6K) and I just wanted to know what others thought in terms of timing. When to open. Should my profits on ebay be the deciding factor? I know my profits could be higher off ebay because ebay and paypal rob me of a significant amount of money, but then again so would hosting fees, design fees, adverts, etc.

You can do it now, but you should still keep your ebay store open (if you hadn't decided to already) listed with the most frequently bought items. Whenever you sell something, include a business card for your own website and other advertisements inside the package. Maybe offer free shipping for that customer's first order from your site, or some sort of discount. You can always close the site if it doesn't work out, and still be selling on ebay.

Stay with Ebay and start your website now. It can take years to draw enough hits to a new website to turn a profit. It takes a long time to get to the top listing of search engines so people can find your site, unless your willing to spend the bucks to get there.

Start your website NOW. The sooner you get it going the sooner you can get it indexed by the search engines. Your own website will help and enhance your eBay store. I will list links to FREE webhosting and FREE shopping cart software below that you can do yourself. These are legitimate, no-gimmick services. I use the free hosting myself and the shopping cart software is a free, open-source program.
