What about buying a Timeshare for investment (to rent it out)?

Some sellers seem to be willing to sell their deed for little $$ just to get rid of it and maintenance fees. Some selling prices are exorbitant. Is there money to be made by purchasing (good location and good season) strictly to rent it to vacationers? Opinions? Pros or cons?

I refer to a timeshare week at vacation resorts across the nation or international.

There are no pro's.

The cons are that the maintenance fee will be more then you can rent it out for.

This is even worse then just flushing your investment down the toilet, you are stuck with fees you can not get out of!

Just about anything is a better plan then this one.

I have over a dozen rental properties and ZERO timeshares and wouldn't buy one if you held a gun to my head.

That should tell you something.

Timeshares are lousy investments all around, even if you keep it just to use for vacation. How many times are you going to visit the same place at the exact same two weeks per year?

We were posed this question and just decided against it..Maybe not such a good idea now with the way the economy is now. We have spent the night in one of those places in Mo.. nice.. but I just dont think I would have timeshare invested now.

1. Timeshares are not financial investments
2. They are not scams (except for places where you go to the exact same place at the exact same time.)
3. Buy one with a resort CHAIN like Hilton, Hyatt, Westin, Mariott, Ritz Carlton, etc.
4. I can stay in Hawaii in a 2 bedroom suite for the cost of my maintenance fee ($700). If you had to pay for that out of your pocket, I assure you you would pay several thousand for that week ($5000-7000) for ocean front which is what I'm getting. The $300 a night people pay there is for an ocean view room at best. I also have a kitchen, dining room, privacy, washer and dryer, and access to the pools that the regular guests do not.
5. I can go all over the world by transferring points.

Getting the right one makes all the difference. Never rent it out though it is wasteful. Yes I own investment property and I consider a timeshare to be a huge moneysaver.

this is too long

I almost bought one in Vegas. Time shares are risky and I was glad I came to my senses. The maintenance is high and not worth the 2 weeks out of the year to go. You need to also think about transportation getting to your destination鈾?/div>
