Short term | investments - isn't that an oxymoron where short term refers to thing like day trading AND investment refers to something that is being done for the longer run - of course there is a joke that many day traders have investments which were supposed day trades that went bad and they didn't take a stop :)

So I am going to answer your question and say realistically no AND it isn't neccessarily even related to your $5000 amount - it would be your time frame. Either you are going to be a good day trader which 95% of people lose trying OR you are going to be very lucky.

If you find a great deal on a piece of real estate (study market, hunt around, find something that is undermarketed)

tie it up with your 5k... use it as earnest money and make your real estate purchase and sale agreement subject to your name PLUS "and or assigns" in the purchaser blank.

then, market the HELL out of that home and resell it for another 10-20 grand. assign the purchase and sale to the new owners. this is a VERY simple explanation but it does work for clever people!

ALSO: a friend of mine goes to sleazy auctions with a certified appraiser, buys high end jewelry (rolex, pavez watches, big rings, etc) The appraiser verifies the value on the spot. he bids up to a value of 50% of market. wins, then puts it on ebay or advertises it for sale in the paper for 30% off retail value. makes 20% in two weeks. 5grand can buy a 15,000 watch often times.

Another friend advertises money to loan in the paper. He charges 10% loan fee and 1% per month (12% apr) or more. Most are short term loans, 1-3 months. He flips alot of money this way and ALWAYS GETS COLLATERAL.

or (risky) Currency trading. you can leverage alot of money with 5k.
