Is philatelic investment a smart way to make money?

Speculating in any collectible is difficult to make real money, since it's impossible to guage how any particular piece will appreciate.

And, it's a fairly illiquid way to store your assets, since you can't readily cash everything in when you need to. If you were to try to cash out the whole collection, you'd likely get less money than if you were to do it piecemeal. But doing it piece by piece takes a lot of time.

And are you in a market where there's lots of activity like this? Meaning lots of other buyers/collectors anywhere around you?

Not a recommended investment medium, no. Requires too much specialized expertice and there are too many forgeries on the market. It is very difficult to judge the quality of a stamp. Has it been regummed? Has it been reperfed? Has cancellation been removed? Is the cancellation fake? Does the stamp have hidden damage? There are so many doctored stamps on the market that chances are almost 2 to 1 that if it is an investment type stamp, it has been altered or is a fake.
