What is the difference between CFP and CFA? Which is more knowledgeable in investment your money?

A Certified Financial Planner helps retail individuals determine how to allocate their investments. Usually they will suggest different funds based upon their clients time horizon and risk tolerance. Often the products they recommend are managed by a CFA charter holder. They may deal with investments as low as a few hundred dollars or possibly into the millions. The latter case is reserved for private wealth managers, many whom work for large investment banks.

A Chartered Financial Analyst may act as an analyst, trader, or portfolio manager. Their job is often assessing the value of different types of securities and making recommendations based upon their research. Often they'll run large funds which on the small side will have a few million and run into the billions. You won't find a CFA at a local bank recommending investments to retail clients and the designation is considered more prestigious within the industry.

CFP- Certified Financial Planner.
A person who has completed a required two-year study program with testing. A CFP鈥檚 main activity is setting up investment plans for individuals.

CFA- Chartered Financial Analyst.
(Chartered Financial Analyst qualification) The industry qualification for research analysts on the buy side (markets) and analysts and fund managers on the sell side (investment management and private banking).

Both designations have their benefits... In terms of managing money, either can and both are highly respected. The difference comes in terms of focus. If you need to manage and set up estates and trusts/wills, a CFP is your best bet.

A CFA (as mentioned above) focuses mostly on analytical pursuits and is probably better at recommending securities to buy or sell based on valuation.

Overall, it depends on what your investment management goal is.
