Is it wise to swing trade a 401k plan account?

Lets say we would have our 401k money in a fixed rate, and it was making a garanteed interest, Would it be wise to move it into higher risks like funds whenever the stock market is down, and hopefully make a profit when the market rebounds.

What you're talking about is trying to time the markets. A lot of people try that and few come out ahead. Pick an asset allocation for your 401(k) that fits your needs and time horizon and stick to it with regular contributions.

You can't even do that with a 401k. How are you going to get your human resource person to swing trades. Also your choice of investments, mutual fund, stock are limited to that 401k package. It will cost money to do trades. First you need to transfer the plan to a IRA or Roth IRA. You can swing trade and it is wise, but it's only the buy low and sell high. If it really worked, everyone would be a stock trader.

Engineer is right.

do some research on what distribution your portfolio should have and make some changes.

if youre young you can stand more risk, but still spread it around amoungst mutial funds for Growth, and Income. Balanced funds are a good way to go.

Then Stick With them....dont change them any time you see the evening news. it will drive you crazy. Put it in a safe place and keep it there.
