Where can I read about what a "money market mutual fund is"?


Wikipedia's article doesn't make it clear.

this is an easy one...
a money market fund is a portfolio made up entirely of (very) short-term U.S. government bonds, basically t-bills. these typses of bills are the most liquid (easily sell-able) pieces of paper in the world, so they're basically a "cash equivalent."

as a rule, the bills held in a money market have a maturity of under a year!

if you go to a brokerage firm like a merrill lynch, dain rauscher, morgan stanley, etc., they'll offer you one for free that you can treat like a checking account. they'll give you checks for it, but the account still makes money-market type interest rates...

go get 'em, tiger.

try about.coms financial section. as far as i know its just a term for a lower risk fund that invests in federally insured accounts through banks-(money market accounts, cds, private bonds, etc)
