Why does morning star rating on a mutual fund show 3 stars while the fund made 22% returns in the last year? because to get the 22% they took on too much risk, or the fees were exorbitant, or the manager is changing, or .. The ratings aren't simply based on one year's performance. They have a host of factors considered. It can be of a few other factors. Annualized return, not just the return from last year. Risk factor. Price to earnings ratio. Ect. The morningstar ranking system is based on return vs volatility against its peers. If the fund was in a high flying asset group, 22% may not have been that high. It is also a long term rating so although the most recent returns are the most important in the rankings, longer term performance is taken into account |
