Whats the difference of mutual fund, class A, B. C, R and Institutionalized shares?

Whats the difference of mutual fund, class A, B. C, R and Institutionalized shares?

A shares: pay a load (fee) up front. As you cross certain thresholds (ie: 25K, 50K, 100K, etc) the load generally decreases. There is no cost to see the shares. Internal expenses are generally the lowest of a,b,c shares.

B: don't pay upfront load. back ended load if you sell it with in first 5-6 years...load gets less every year. Converts to A shares after 6-8 years. expense ratio usually .8-1% higher than A shares.

C: no cost to buy. General 1% penalty if you sell in less than a year. expense ratio generally .8-1% higher than A shares for 10 years...then converts to class F where expenses are close to A shares.

R: generally found within 401K plans.

Typically the class of fund dictates the fee structure. A funds are front end loads, B funds are back end loads, C funds are no load funds and R funds are Redemption load funds. These classes differ from fund to fund, you have to read the prospectus to determine what the classification means for any fund your contemplating purchasing.
