What is a mutual fund? how is it defined and what does it include? A mutual fund is a company. A company established to pool funds of many people for investing in any manner of businesses, stocks, bonds, real estate or any other area stated in the mutual fund company's prospectus. The prospectus is the written full disclosure of all relevant data on the mutual fund company from investment objectives to operating costs and management fees and the company's management team and their compensation. Basically the mutual company can do anything the prospectus says it can, and do nothing that the prospectus does not specifically state.
