Why don't more mutual fund companies offer index funds like Vanguard?

Why does Vanguard seem to have the monopoly on index funds?

They seem to have a monopoly because you aren't looking at anyone else. Fidelity has a bunch of index funds and if you are looking to minimize your capital gains I would also take a look at IShares Exchange traded funds. I believe Vanguard has recently come out with a few of those as well.

Fidelity does

there are dozens of index funds out there - remember there are 100's if not 1000's of mutual fund companies around

Vanguard is a mutual fund company.

I think you meant to say "Brokerages".

Many other mutual fund companies have index funds.

Vanguard does not charge large fees like some other companies.
