Mutual funds are conglomerates of many individual stocks (share of ownership). The fund companies buy the individual stocks and package them according to the funds' concept and ratios (i.e. growth companies, tech companies, etc.).
When you invest in a mutual fund, you buy shares of that fund. This allows small, individual investors to participate in the stock market by pooling their money in hopes of achieving the goal stated by the fund. To establish a portfolio of individual companies' stock takes large amounts of money and detailed understanding of the stock market.

A mutual fund is a composite of many stocks. Generally it is a mixture of low, moderate and high risk stoks to create a more stable growth in value.

if you buy a mutual fund it is made up of a group of stocks. A stock in a mutual fund would be one of them. such as GM could be a stock in a mutual Fund. When you buy the mutual fund you ge all the stocks.
