How do you find a lost mutual fund IRA?

Around 22 years ago, in my early 20's, I opened a $2000 IRA through a friend of a friend who just got a job with some financial company that I can't remember. He came to my house and I gave him a check for two grand (don't know how I even had that much), and promptly lost the paperwork. All I remember is that it was a mutual fund and not with a bank. I checked the "missing money" websites, but there is no listing. Any suggestions of how to find this account?

(I should add that I do remember getting a quarterly statement or two, it was a real account. Then I moved and forgot to forward my mail. Yes, I know that was dumb.)

I so appreciate that people are taking the time to try to help. This situation is really pathetic (I wonder if there are others whose IQs dipped so badly in their 20's)...I don't have those tax returns anymore, I don't remember who the original friend was (probably a work-mate), I have no recollection of the company or fund ... we're talking NO leads. Is there some kind of database search that can be done ...?

Check your tax return for that year, it should have mentioned it.

I'd try to get a hold of that old friend. You never know, that particular fund may have gone under sometime in the last 20 some years and may not even exist anymore.

But don't quit trying to find it, it's probably worth several thousand right now, and maybe even more if it was a reputable company. Good luck to you.
