How do I gain control of my mutual fund if I'm not the custodian?

My aunt started a mutual fund for me when I was a child under the Florida Uniform Transfers to Minors Act when. Now I'm 21, and everything I read about the UTMA says that when I become a legal adult, I can do whatever I want with the fund without the permission of the custodian. But every time I call Ameriprise, they tell me that in order to change ownership or withdraw funds I need her signature. I left a message with the call center guys' boss and am expecting a call back, but am I not right here? Can't I get at the acount without my aunt's permission?

You are correct. All you should have to do is provide them proof you are who you say you are and that you are of legal age. If she refuses to sign and Ameriprise does not grant you access, you can presue this issue legally. A UTMA is an irrevocable gift that becomes your at age 18 or 21 depending on state. I would be surprised if they don't work with you once you talk to the "boss", I have seen your situation before an the broker must release funds to you if you request and can prove you are who you say you are and are of legal age. Best of luck, don't be afraid of being demaning if they what to be A hole's about it.

I think she is still the custodian. I would read it very carefully. If your right get a store front lawyer. For about 200 dollars he'll set it straight
