How to calculate the return amount in mutual fund for the below scenario?

Mutual Fund units worth Rs. 10,000 at an NAV of Rs. 10 per unit. The Entry Load on the Mutual Fund was 2%. On September 15, 2004, he sold all the units at an NAV of Rs 20. The exit load was 0.5%.

cost of purchase of MF=1000*10 = 10,000
add: entry Load @2% = 200
(A) total purchase value 10,200
less: sales value 1000*20 = 20000
exit load @.5% = 100
(B) total sales value (19,900)
NETreturn (A-B) = 9,700

you cannot calculate the returns It is based on the share market. If the mutual fund company has made money in the share market you will get a divident and if the mutual fund has not made meney you may not get any divident. Usually if the share market is good you will definately get some returns. But all in all nobody can calculate any fixed return.

invested =10,000
entry load= 2%=RS.200
INVESTMENT AFTER ENTRY LOAD=RS.9800
NO.OF.UNITS=980 UNITS
NO.OF.UNITS*RS.20=RS.20*980=RS.19600
EXIT LOAD=0.5%=RS.98
TOTAL AFTER EXIT LOAD=RS.19502

Actually my calculation is slightly different than the other guys

NAV at purchase = Rs 10
On this there is entry load of 2%
So purchase price is actually 10.2
For Rs 10000, you get 10000/10.2 = 980.392 units

Now, at time of sale, NAV = Rs. 20 and there is exit load of 5%
So, sale price = 19.9 (20 - 0.5% exit load)
No of units = 980.392
Therefore, sale proceeds = 980.392*19.9 = Rs 19509.8008

Return = 19509.8008-10000 = Rs 9509.8008
Since you have not given date of purchase, I am assuming it is 1 year time frame.
So % return = 95.098008%
Of course, there is 10% capital gain tax (as this is held for a year), and we assume this is NOT ELSS
So net post tax gain = 8558.82072
Net post-tax return = 85.588%

Not bad eh...
