How do I make a return authorization number for my new online business?

I noticed for a lot of website returns, that return authorization numbers are given to customers when returning merchandise. How are these numbers created? Is there a software to use or are they just made up as per each business' needs demand?

There are many shopping cart softwares that include the feature of return authorization. Here are some shopping cart software with these features:

Yes they are just made up.
They are a way to track which package comes from which customer.
Unless you have several dozen returns a week you won't be needing to worry about that right away.
