How do u know if an online business is legitimate?

I would like to be able to know if a business online is legitimate before providing personal information or credit card information.

check the better business bureau. it's at www.bbb.org . you can enter the business name & they'll tell what complaints there are against the company.

this is a million dollar question. 1st look for their physical address and contact numbers if it looks genuine I verify it with on-line phone directory. I also sometimes search who register the web address. then next comes to review, search on yahoo/google, u will find good and bad things about them.
If its a small company I try to use something like paypal or phone order.
