I don't know anything about starting out a online business but want to?

I have some great ideas for online businesses, but no clue where to start. I started reading "Starting an online business for dummies".

The first business i want to start is a shirts and hats company (like t shirts, polos and hats)

First, you will need one or more suppliers willing to sell to you at a deep discount that will allow you to make a profit. Depending on where you are located and who you want to buy from, you may need a business license and resale permit to buy wholesale.
You will probably also need a business bank account and the ability to process online payments such as credit cards and PayPal.

You will need a website with the ability to process online payments, track inventory, and manage your items. These can sometimes be "out of the box" and fairly inexpensive, or if you pay someone to develop a site for you, it can be very costly. Before spending a lot of time and money, you may want to first try selling on eBay, Yahoo! Shopping or similar methods without having to develop your website first. That way you will know what the demand for your items is and what price levels you can sell at.

Once you have your own site, how will you drive people there? If you use a pay-per-click service, for example, and pay 25 cents for each visitor, will the visitors buy enough to cover the costs of keeping the site active?

In my opinion, it is better to sell just a few items with a high profit margin, say about $50 per item, than to sell items where the margin is only a dollar or so above cost. It's not worth the time and trouble to pack the item, let alone deal with customer returns and other problems that might arise.
