Online Business.. How to make it legal?

I want to run an online network of online tutors to supply to students. It is like a matching student-tutors thing. I would want the business to be legal and legitimate. Are there licenses for this or formalities so I can have a name or maybe build a website for it eventually? Thanks for your precious time...

Online businesses particularly online tutors are currently not required to get a license to operate.

But to make your business legal you need to go first and decide on your legal structure and then register your business. If you decide to be a sole proprietorship, you go to your local county/city clerk's office and file for business registration. If you decide to operate as a partnership, LLC or corporation, then you register your business with the Secretary of State.

Part of the process of business registration will be filing for your DBA or doing business as; otherwise known as assumed business name or fictitious name. This is needed if you are naming a business with a name other than your given name.

Procedures for business registration vary per state. In Virginia, a sole proprietorship can complete the process in 30 minutes or 1 hour at most. While in Los Angeles, you will be required to make an announcement in the papers about the new business.

You did not indicate what state you are in. Go either to the Secretary of State website or your state government website (e.g. Alabama.gov) as they usually have information on the process of starting a business in the state.
