A friend of mine recently (within the last year or so) started work with a company that sells remote control (RC) cars online. They have a connection with the supplier in China and basically use Google's advertising system (adwords) to drive traffic to the site and generate revenue.

If you have agreements, partnerships, or some kind of deal to get the high-tech toys at a discounted price (or better yet, exclusive rights to sell the product...only you can sell it) chances are high that you can make a business out of that.

Your question about whether or not selling toys online being a great investment requires more information then I have at the moment, but here's a start to finding the answer you're looking for:

-What is the market for the high-tech toys you plan to sell? For example, if it's 30-40 year old single men with income over $75,000 is the number of people in that category increasing over the next few years (growing customer base) or are people outside of the category starting to buy the toys too (expanding customer base)?


The short answer to your question: Yes. Assuming you have a deal to buy the high-tech toys for less and that there is a market for them, selling through an online store or ebay is fairly inexpensive. With low costs you can more or less easily enter the market without a significant investment, giving you better odds that you'll make a return on your investment.

People who buy toys want to touch them, hold them in their hands, see how they work. The recent stories of lead-containing toys from China have scared a lot of parents, who will be more cautious about how they buy toys.

Another problem is competing with the big retailers, who buy in quantities of millions, not dozens or hundreds, and already have established websites for selling them online.
